A guide to the fitness qualifications
Personal trainer courses
On training.gov.au, the Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40221) reflects the role of personal trainers, and the Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30321) the role of group and gym fitness instructors. Personal Trainer Courses is a guide to both, and to the training providers that teach them, written and published by Dotto.
The step from III to IV
The two start from different places. The Certificate III lists no entry requirements. The Certificate IV is open to people who already hold a set of listed units, among them HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety.
The work changes with the step. A Certificate III instructor works in predictable settings under general supervision. A Certificate IV personal trainer works on their own, writes personalised exercise programs, and refers clients with higher health risks to medical or allied health professionals.
Where each leads changes too. The Certificate III is a pathway to work as a fitness instructor in gyms, fitness facilities, and leisure and community centres. The Certificate IV is a pathway to personal training, employed or self-employed, in those places and also in clients’ homes and workplaces and outdoors, and it allows for online training.

Four things to know before paying for a course
- No licence in the documents
- Both qualification documents say that when they were published, no occupational licence, certification or specific legislative requirement applied to them.
- Loans start at diploma level
- VET Student Loans are for certain diploma-level qualifications and above, so neither fitness certificate is one they cover.
- Refund terms before you enrol
- Among what a provider must clearly tell you are its refund eligibility and any cooling-off period.
- The regulator does not settle disputes
- ASQA, the national regulator, cannot resolve disputes between students and training providers.
About this guide
Personal Trainer Courses is a guide to becoming a personal trainer through the national qualifications, written and published by Dotto. Every fact on it comes from an official page: the qualification documents on training.gov.au, ASQA, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, and, for working with children, the Queensland Government. Those pages are listed at the foot of each guide, and this page’s are listed below.
It is general information. It names no training provider, gym or course, and it ranks none.
